The Ketogenic Way of Eating
I would be more inclined to call the Ketogenic way of eating more of a “diet” instead of a lifestyle. A diet is something that may bring quicker results but may be difficult to sustain for a consistent period of time. The Ketogenic Diet is now one of the world’s most searched diets on Google. It is enticing for those who wish to lose weight quickly. This eating path is indeed attractive as it promises weight loss and answers for certain health problems. Eating the strict Ketogenic way of eating is somewhat similar to the Atkins diet of years past.
Atkins had no restrictions on the amount of protein consumed. The premise of the Keto Diet is that protein creates glucose and thus should be limited. Fat is the hero in the Keto diet. This plan believes in eating lots and lots of fat to get the body to burn fat and to get the brain to burn ketones versus glucose. One’s goal in this plan to keep the body in a state of ketosis. The state of Ketosis is achieved by severely limiting the number of carbohydrates consumed, eliminating fruits and limiting protein.
- There are good things about the Ketogenic way of eating. In my opinion, the biggest benefit is that it eliminates sugar and flour from the diet. If you stop eating sugar and flour, many good things start to happen. Sugar and flour are poison, and will over time ruin one’s health.
- Our daughter-in-law has had very good results following the Keto way of eating.
- Good fats are needed by the body.
- Many desperately want the benefit of a rapid weight loss. Is this rapid weight loss easy to maintain? Hmmm!
Are There Any Hidden Dangers?
The reason for rapid weight loss which may result from the Keto diet is due to the fact that carbohydrates help the cells store water. Therefore, cells become deprived of water when the body is starved of carbohydrates. Lack of carbohydrates begins to leach water from the cells.
Although the scales say you are down 10 pounds, is this accurate? Maybe so, but what might be happending to your body? Every function of the body needs water. I remember a wonderful article called “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water.” Paul Harvey Reviews
Nutrients Keep the Body Strong and Healthy
God created our bodies and provided the nutrients to keep that body strong and healthy. These nutrients contain things to lift depression, promote strong memory formation, and get new neurons into the brain. Good carbohydrates are the natural fuel for the body. These nutrients are rich in plant-based foods to include vegetables and fruits.
There are good things about the Keto way of eating. Personally, I do not think it is one of the three best as far as being a health-filled path. Although it does appear that Paleo eating can be adapted to a less strict version of Keto.
As we follow the Three Principles of Healthy Eating, we find that Keto, although offering benefits, does not meet all three principles. Doing more research on different eating paths over the past two months has shined the light in a very favorable way on the best principles of Paleo, Blue Zones, and a path called Sane.
