Getting Older or Better?
My choice for getting older or better is better. John is now 80 and I will be there in a little over a year. Oh my goodness! We don’t feel old at all. How we do thank the Lord for His mercy and for His instructions on long life.
Proverbs 3:1-2 ESV
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.
Renewing our Mind
Our pastor, Curry Blake, has opened our eyes to amazing truths in God’s Word. Adam was created in the image of God. He was smart enough to name every animal. His mind was phenomenal before the fall, when he ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and died spiritually. This fallen nature passed to all men born after Adam.
How we thank the Lord Jesus for coming to rescue us. He paid the price for us.
When we receive Him as Lord and Savior, we become a “new creation in Christ Jesus”. Old things (the old fallen nature is passed way and all things become new.) The Holy Spirit now comes to live in our spirits. We are restored to the image of Christ. What an amazing thought.
Be Transformed
One problem arises that all Christians face. That new Spirit in us is trapped within us until we renew our mind and become transformed.
Romans12:1,2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
We can renew our mind by reading and believing and acting on the Word of God.
Getting Older Does Not Mean Our Brain Wears Out
Dr. Caroline Leaf reveals how science is now catching up with the Bible. Old thinking, old research tells us several things about getting older that really are not true. Getting older does not mean that the brain is degenerating. Old thinking is actually wrong thinking. However, this kind of thinking will bring above-unwanted things to pass. Thankfully, we can learn the truth, and do things to prevent these results from old thinking.
Neuroplasticity
Dr. Caroline Leaf tells us that the newly emergent science of neuroplasticity proves that the brain can reorganize itself. It can change and alter its structure as we think. “What we choose to think about and how we choose to think can switch our genes on and off; changing the structure and function of the brain.” ~ Dr. Leaf.
The brain only gets better with use. It never wears out. It does not degenerate unless we fail to use it. God tells us in His Word that we are each fearfully and wonderfully made. It is marvelous to think about how God created us in His image. “There is no expiration date on potential.” ~Dr. Leaf
Potential is Unlimited
Many years ago, John and I learned about God’s Covenant of Divine Health. We began believing for long life and good health. “As our days are, so shall our strength be.” This scripture, Deuteronomy 33:25, is one of my favorite scriptures. For the past four years, we have prayed this daily.
It’s Not too Late
We began ballroom dancing lessons and crossfit training in our 70’s. Both have been a key to keeping flexible and mobile. Dancing works our muscles and our brain. Our Crossfit training has helped with our strength and balance.
What Can You Do That You May Not Think Possible?
God has created each of us with an incredible amount of potential. Getting older does not mean that our brain is degenerating; unless we believe it will, and fail to use our body or our brain. The later years can be the best years of our life. They are that way for John and I. We are extremely grateful. Dancing can keep you young.
