Change Your Weight Set Point
For so many years I searched for the puzzle pieces to change my weight set point. This article is one I originally actually wrote in 2008. There had to be some hidden secrets I just couldn’t figure out. It made no sense. Sometimes I lost a pound or two and then ate so little, but the scales showed weight gain. Sometimes I ate so much and scales remained the same. My days literally became consumed with trying to get out from under this huge fear and worry of weight.

The Puzzle Pieces
I have some good news. I found the puzzle pieces and I broke
free from this weight worry prison. And you can too. Not only did I
break free, but I have also stayed free for almost three decades now. This
freedom can be for a lifetime.
HEALTH IS A CIRCLE
Let me start by telling you that health is a circle, a “Fabulous
Circle”, so interlinked it is nothing short of amazing. This circle has
many components. You know about most of them: calories,
exercise, water………this isn’t anything new. What you may not know
is the way these puzzle pieces fit together and how they contribute to
your unique weight SetPoint.
YOUR SETPOINT
Yes, you have a SetPoint. Your brain continually is relaying
messages which are carried by hormones throughout your body and
back to the brain. If your brain thinks your fat stores are too large, it
sends directions for your body to burn off the excess. If it thinks they
are too low, it sends signals to find food. Your brain, your control
center, has a constant goal to keep your weight at your unique Set
Point.
The entire network of your body systems all work together to
maintain your ideal body weight – the weight at which your body will
try to remain through thick and thin. If you aren’t at your ideal
weight, your set point has been damaged. It can only be brought
lower by making some underlying repairs.

Dieting is Not the Answer
First, we must understand that dieting alone cannot alter this
ever so stubborn SetPoint. This has been the traditional approach for
changing body size and weight for almost forever. It has failed 94.5%
of the time. The body will work hard to get back to where it thinks it should
be when you are dieting and after you stop. Just reducing your food intake
won’t make it. You need a system of baby steps to create the way for your
SetPoint to work at its ideal place for the rest of your life. It won’t be repaired
in a day, but the process can begin today.
How Metabolism Works
What can you do? Metabolism covers the billions of reactions
that take place in our body as it works to convert food to energy ☺ or
fat.
Exercise uses ¼ of our food intake each day. Exercise also
increases our body’s production of slimming hormones, which you will
soon see is very important. Hormones burn another ¼. The other ½,
our biggest energy burner, is our Basic Metabolism.
Wonders of Hormones
Of these three components of metabolism, the hormones
greatly determine your metabolic speed. Sound like this might be
important? It is. This speed of the hormones plays a major role in
where your weight SetPoint is. And, of course, this speed varies
from person to person.
The hormones slow down if they don’t have essential nutrients
to act as catalysts for the millions of metabolic reactions that take
place. Certain hormones have even been given the name of
“slimming hormones.” These control the rate at which fat is burned.
One more thing to know: Free radicals can damage and destroy,
among other things, our precious slimming hormones. When the
hormones are working as they should, we might say they waltz along
keeping us slim and trim.
Let’s stop here and let this be part one of a two-part series on

strategies to get the stubborn Set Point repaired.
