Does Your Happiness Depend on a Number?
Mine used to. I used to weigh each morning. And sadly, I let the result of what the scale told me trick me into bad days. No, not anymore. About 20 years ago I realized this trick of the devil and the tool he was using against me. I put the scales away. Now I only step on them about once a year when I go in for an annual checkup. It was a process to break free, but I am so thankful I did. Of course, I am aware of how my clothes fit, what I eat and am committed to exercise; but weight and the number on the scales no longer throws me into worry.
How about you? Do you feel good before you step on the scales and terrible after? Maybe it didn’t budge and you had really been trying to so hard. Maybe the number even went up:( Weight can vary day by day, hour by hour even. As we exercise and build muscle, the puzzle gets even trickier. Muscle weighs more than fat, but takes up much less space. You are probably building muscle, but you take it as a sign that your exercise isn’t working. Your metabolism is starting to repair from your days of actually not eating enough and slowing that metabolism down. You take it as a sign that you need to cut your calories down more and thus you slow your metabolism back down. All in all, as days go by the the scale continues to beat you up, it becomes easy to decide: “What’s the use anyway of even trying.”
Have you given the scale power like I did years ago? It is so very easy to do. The good news is that you can break free just as I did. The law of the spirit of life (joy, peace, happiness and hope) has made your free from the law of sin and death (worry, fear, hopelessness, and despair). Romans 8:2
An article by Elizabeth Millard zeroes in on three signs that might tell you that you need to put the scales away for at least a little while:
- When the scale has the power to change your good emotions. If the scale is working against you, get rid of it like I did.
- When the scale number causes you to react by making abrupt and severe changes like eating nothing or feeling like you can celebrate and overeat.
- When you begin doing multiple daily weigh-ins.
