Habits to Accompany Your Goal

Goals checklistTurn Goals into Habits

As Team Fabulous begins our kickoff course for 2017, we will be going back to a foundational principle on Monday night (our first actual class of the session).  Before we can really go anywhere, we need a goal. Coupled with the goal, we need a couple of habits that we develop that will take us to the goal. It is a pretty simple concept, but something I had not thought on much before and something that is so easy to slip as rushed days arrive. It is really pretty easy to do. Like Jeff Olsen in his book, The Slight Edge, teaches, it is also one of those things pretty easy to be overlooked. Few people do this. For me, I have seen it work and I want to cement this principle into my life.

The Simple Concept

Establish your goal and then break that goal into
habits that you take into autopilot.

How to Turn a Goal into Habit

Focusing on one goal at a time may be much more powerful than having many goals with divided attention.  Once the goal is set for the month (some of mine have had a two month + time frame), begin to think of where you are now and what habits need to be in place to achieve that goal. My  goal for February/March is to complete the development of and to teach the new Four Weeks to a Lifetime course with the added emphasis of Dr. Caroline Leaf’s material on Brain Research and the Brain, I need two main habits established and taken to autopilot:

  1. Time scheduled to complete the addition of my Dr. Leaf notes to strategic parts of the course.
  2. Daily prayer and scripture affirmation for this course to come together and each person to be blessed by it.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste but a wonderful theme to invest in

ZFocuseroing in on one important goal alone for at least a set period of time, (with the associated habits decided upon and committed to), takes the habit toward autopilot  and at the same time moves you right to the achievement of the goal.

Autopilot is where the miracle occurs. Will Power is no longer needed. The habit has become easier to do than not to do.

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
