The Grand Hotel of Somewhere in Time
This has to be one of the best birthdays I have ever spent. It began with a wonderful evening with our family two nights before we left for Mackinac Island in Michigan. Being with our children and grandchildren is one of my most favorite ever things to do.
We left early early early on Friday morning for our adventure. Many thanks to our son, Pace, who was willing to get up in the middle of the night to get us to the airport. (And we also have great thanks to our daughter, Brooke, who fought the Monday afternoon work traffic to get us from the airport.)
To get to this magnificent place, we had to take two flights, then a shuttle, then a ferry across the Great Lake and then a horse and buggy taxi to the hotel. We had such fun traveling with our friends Linda and Mike Henrie. This is the little cozy airport in Pelston, Michigan. There is only one flight out a day going to Pelston. Thankfully ours was not cancelled as other friends from Mississippi we met said theirs was the day before. Now to the Shuttle, then the Ferry across the big Great Lake, and then the Horse and Buggy Taxi:

- Arriving at the Grand Hotel
We didn’t know what to expect as far as what the hotel might look like, much less our room. Our weekend package included almost all meals with a huge buffet breakfast each morning and a five course dinner each night. The dining room was astonishing, as was the service:
- Our room even had a lakeside view
- The huge dining room
- The back of the hotel
This was the one Dance Weekend of the year. We met our other friends when we got here. They had come another route in order to see the fall colors and drive some. This was also one of the last weeks the hotel would be open as almost the entire island closes down at the end of October due to the bitter cold weather and the frozen lake. Our Dance weekend included a formal dance Friday and Saturday nights and another dance Sunday night. It also included 3 dance lessons on Saturday: Tango, Cha Cha, and Swing. We videoed the lessons and came back to have Ben (our dance instructor here) help us get them down.
- View from our table in the dining room
- John and I before the Saturday night dance
- Our friends at the tree where Miss McKenza and Richard met in the movie
- John and I at the tree, which Tommy and Terry Quon found
It was a beautiful trip with very good friends. We would love to plan to go to this dance weekend again next October. If you want a very special get away, I encourage you to check the packages at the Grand Hotel out. It was worth every penny we spent.
Have you been to Mackinac Island?
Have you stayed at the Grand Hotel?
And more important, have you seen the movie, Somewhere in Time?
