MY GRANDSON JOINS ME
My story left off with my joining the CrossFit Ammo Foundation Class the last week of July. I learned in that class that I wasn’t nearly as strong as I thought I was.
The first of August, my almost 16-year-old grandson, Austin, decided he wanted to join CrossFit Ammo and prepare for his upcoming baseball season. He was just completing a long year out of sports as he recovered from a torn ACL from the previous football season. Thankfully and surprisingly, he wasn’t even embarrassed (that I could tell anyway) to go with his grandmother. So we went four days a week for the month of August. I continued to travel to the gym “terrified” not knowing what the workout would be and if I could do it. I left feeling exhausted, but thankful, thrilled and praising the Lord that I actually completed another workout.
REALIZATION
As I think back now, I realize my fear was based on comparing myself with the others in my class, as well as, fear of not knowing how I would do. Soon I realized my only comparison was with myself and my own progress, and I had to totally give up looking at the others. I also began to realize that each CrossFit class can be modified and that the trainers at Ammo were so thoughtful and gracious to watch each person carefully and modify any aspect needing to be adapted for the person. (Mine needed a whole bunch of modification!)
For myself, I had to make the decision that I would do rowing instead of running on the concrete. I also chose alternatives to the jumping.
This was by far the hardest exercise I had ever done. My rear end was rubbed raw from sit-ups and after one or two workouts, my back really hurt. Nevertheless, I pressed on, got a chiropractic adjustment for my back, and continued to trust the Lord. Was soon and still am pain free.
To be continued . . . (Follow this blog for updates throughout the month!)
