Weight Loss Myths
It is the little foxes that spoil the vine. Myths work their way into our thinking and become the truth to us. These myths can totally trip us up on our path to fitness and long life. Let’s review a few:
I Can Lose it Later
When we are young, this is true for many. Research says that even after our early twenties, it becomes harder.
I like to think, instead, of a short term balance act that would be more on the side of prevention. If I know that my upcoming week will have a special event that I wish to eat outside of my guidelines and enjoy, I will be sure on the days surrounding that event that I am stricter with my standard guidelines of eating (which for me is Paleo). For example, today we are taking our grandson, Chandler, out to lunch for his 20th birthday. He wants to go to Gloria’s. I usually have extra Paleo Tortillas made for a lunch out at a Mexican restaurant. I usually take these and order fajitas. This time, I don’t have any tortillas to take ,so I will enjoy the flour or corn ones there with fajitas, and John and I will have watermelon or something light for dinner. (I was able to order and use butter lettuce leaves today instead of tortillas.)
The thing I have to watch is the chips they serve before the entree. This is not an easy thing for me to resist. For me it is best to either decide beforehand that I will eat only 4 for example or to decide I will eat none. Note: this decision has to be made beforehand or the temptation will be too much. Seems pretty strict and hard……..not really. It is a mindset. I remember that feeling good and looking fit is much better than any food can ever taste.
There are good reasons to NOT go along with the belief in this “I will lose it later” myth.
Losing it later mentality throws one into a diet mode. Diets easily cause us to lose muscle and not fat. Ugh! Less muscle equals poorer metabolism and less calories burned. At the end of most every diet, weight is regained with extra added. This leads us to the next myth.
Once You Lose it, It Stays Off
Don’t we wish this were true. It isn’t. Diets never work long term. Only Lifestyle Change works long term.
Fat is Fat, No Matter Where it is
No, this myth is incorrect too. Belly Fat is more dangerous.
Every 3.5 pounds you add to your lower body adds 2.6 billion new fat cells that are pretty much there to stay.
All Extra Calories are Equal
They are far from equal. New math says calories from alcohol, saturated fat and sugars quickly go to become dangerous belly fat.
I don’t count t calories, but I do stay away from the main culprits as much as possible.
I Can Work of the Extra Calories
Exercise is definitely a bonus helper, but we can never count on exercise alone. Our lifestyle of good healthy eating choices will always be paramount.
Little things, little thoughts, make a big difference. Our goal at Fabufit is to change our thoughts from myths to truth, from negative to positive and from insignificance to very significant status. As we change our thoughts, we change our lives.
Our next team course begins in a few weeks: Engaging Your Energy. Watch for notice of this soon.
