What is Emotional Eating?
“For many people, simply eliminating emotional eating can be the difference between weighing 250 and 125, no dieting involved.” ~ Bob Green
It is possible and very likely that these upcoming holiday months of November and December may be the hardest of all the months to sidestep Emotional Eating. These holidays can be fabulously fun and joyful. They can also be lonely for so many who either don’t have a family close , or who have lost loved ones. This season is also a time of many deliciously tempting foods that taste so good when eating them, but leave an emptiness and a bit of despair afterwards.
Let’s Get a Strategy in Place
First we need to know who this enemy is that we are facing. Then we need to know if this enemy can be defeated and how.
What Exactly is Emotional Eating Anyway?
Three main points tell us just what this is:
- Eating for emotional reasons and not due to true physical hunger
- Eating unthinkingly without intention
- Often not an eating problem as much as a symptom of other problems
Can the Cycle be Broken?
The cycle of emotional eating can be broken with time and trust in a never failing heavenly father. Others have and so can you. God says our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. We have been bought with a price and we are instructed to glorify God in our bodies and in our spirits. If He tells us to do this. He must have a way that it can be done.
Why Not?
Depression is no fun at all. We all know that. There is no food that tastes as good as feeling good feels.
How Can the Cycle Be Broken?
If per chance, this area of Emotional Eating is a challenge for you, now is the time to break the cycle. Plan to look back over this holiday season in January and praise the Lord that you came through with victory. We need to make a decision now before we are in the midst of tantalizing temptations.
Since God’s Word is full of power for even the IMPOSSIBLE, it will be a wonderful idea to find a scripture to stand on as your mantra. An idea might be:
“I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.” ~ Phil 4:19 or
“God has armed me with strength for the battle.” Ps 18:39
